The Cape Fear River runs past a downtown of 19th-century warehouses and gas lamps, with restaurants, hotels and event spaces inside a few walkable blocks. Twenty minutes east, the Atlantic starts. Between them sit Wrightsville, Carolina Beach, Kure, Figure Eight, Bald Head and Southport, each with its own beach rules, its own parking problem and, in one case, its own ferry.

The couples who struggle here are not the ones who picked the wrong beach. They are the ones who assumed all six beaches worked the same way. They do not, and the differences are written into town ordinances rather than into anybody's brochure.

Yes. Wilmington's historic district is one of the largest in the country and, more usefully, one of the most compact. Hotels, restaurants and venues sit within a few blocks of the Riverwalk. 128 South is a candlelit brick hall on the riverfront block, and The Atrium by Ligon Flynn is a hidden courtyard-and-glass room that most couples do not find until someone local mentions it.

Brooklyn Arts District

Best for 200 to 350 guests and couples who want scale and architecture in the same room

Just north of downtown, Brooklyn Arts Center is an 1888 steepled church converted into a soaring reception hall. It is the largest and most photographed room in the city, and it books early.

Airlie and the Intracoastal Edge

Best for 150 to 300 guests, spring dates, and ceremonies under a canopy nothing else can match

Between the city and Wrightsville, Airlie Gardens holds the Airlie Oak, a live oak estimated at around 500 years old, in 67 acres of azalea gardens on the water. Spring here is the reason the whole region has an azalea festival. Wrightsville Manor sits nearby, a gated garden manor with inclusive packages minutes from the beach.

Outside Town

Best for 200 to 250 guests, larger guest lists, and better pricing per head

River Landing is a polished golf-community clubhouse north of the city, and it is the value-scale answer when downtown quotes come back higher than expected.

The Beaches, and What Each One Costs You in Logistics

Wrightsville Beach

Best for 100 to 250 guests, beach ceremony with the city fifteen minutes away

The closest and most polished of the beaches, and the one with an actual permit. The Town of Wrightsville Beach requires a special event permit for a beach wedding, currently listed at $130 for fewer than 200 people through Parks and Recreation at 910-256-7925. Blockade Runner Beach Resort is the standby here, a harbor-lawn-to-ocean resort that solves ceremony, reception and lodging in one booking. Parking is the constraint: the island is small, spaces are metered and seasonal, and guests who arrive separately will circle.

Carolina Beach and Kure Beach

Best for 40 to 120 guests and couples who genuinely want it casual

These are the relaxed ones, and they come with the single most surprising rule on this coast. Neither town requires a wedding permit — but neither one permits tents or chairs on the beach either. A Carolina Beach or Kure Beach ceremony is a standing, barefoot ceremony with no arbor, no aisle chairs and no rental setup. Many couples are delighted by that once they know. At the south end of the island, North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher offers a reception beside the shark tank, which is either the best idea in this guide or the worst, depending entirely on your family.

Bald Head Island

Best for 60 to 200 guests and a three-day weekend where everyone stays put

There are no personal cars on Bald Head. Access is a passenger ferry from Deep Point Marina in Southport, about a twenty-minute crossing, leaving the mainland on the hour and the island on the half hour, with round-trip tickets currently around $23 for adults and $12 for children aged 3 to 12, bought in advance. On the island it is golf carts, bicycles and trams.

That single fact reorganises the entire weekend. Luggage moves separately. Vendors need ferry slots. Your florist's van does not come with them. Shoals Club is the dune-top club here, reached by ferry and golf cart like everything else. Build the ferry schedule into your timeline before you build anything else, and give guests the last departure time in writing.

Southport and the Brunswick Coast

Best for 60 to 150 guests and couples who want an old coastal town rather than a beach town

Thirty minutes south of Wilmington, Southport is porches, live oaks and a working waterfront. Quieter, cheaper and considerably less crowded in July than anything closer to the city.

Beaufort and the Crystal Coast

Best for 100 to 200 guests when the guest list is coming from the north

Beaufort Hotel sits on Taylor's Creek in historic Beaufort, about two hours northeast of Wilmington. It is a genuinely different destination rather than a day trip, and it should be planned as one.

Best Time of Year for a Wilmington or Coastal North Carolina Wedding

April, May, September, October and early November are the strongest months, and this coast has an unusually long shoulder season in both directions.

April is spectacular and crowded. The North Carolina Azalea Festival draws more than 300,000 people to Wilmington across five days, and in 2026 it ran April 8 to 12. It fills downtown hotels, closes streets for the parade and puts the Hotel Ballast, its official host hotel, out of reach. Check the festival dates before you check anything else.

May is the best month of the year here. Warm, green, low humidity, water finally swimmable, and the beaches not yet at summer volume.

June through August is hot, humid and busy. Beach parking is the real problem rather than the heat — Wrightsville and Carolina Beach fill by mid-morning on summer weekends, and guests who planned to drive themselves will not find a space near the ceremony.

September and October are the best guest experience of the year and sit squarely inside hurricane season, which officially runs June 1 through November 30 with peak risk from mid-August into early October. This coast takes direct hits more often than most of the Southeast. If you marry in that window, have the cancellation-coverage conversation in month one.

December through March works well for downtown Wilmington, indoor venues and small weddings, at rates that make a beautiful 60-person wedding genuinely affordable.

My pick: early May, or the second half of October once the peak of the season has passed.

How Much Does a Wilmington or North Carolina Coast Wedding Cost?

These are planning ranges rather than quotes. Wilmington is meaningfully less expensive than Charleston at the same guest count, and the gap widens once you leave the immediate beachfront.

The cost couples underestimate is access. Bald Head adds ferry tickets for every guest and every vendor, plus golf cart rental and freight. Wrightsville adds a permit and a parking problem. A private home on Figure Eight adds a gate list, restrooms, power and tenting. None of that shows up in a venue quote.

The second is storm contingency. On this stretch of coast, a September date without event cancellation coverage is a decision rather than an oversight.

Getting Legally Married in New Hanover County

The New Hanover County Register of Deeds lists a $60 marriage license fee, payable by check, cash or credit card, at 320 Chestnut Street, Suite 102 in Wilmington, open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Two details catch destination couples. Marriage licenses here are by appointment only, so this is not a walk-in errand you can run the morning you land. And you must bring proof of a Social Security number — the card, a W-2 or a payroll stub showing the full number — with the name matching your photo ID exactly. A married-name mismatch or a nickname on a pay stub will send you home.

North Carolina has no waiting period, so the license is usable immediately and stays valid for 60 days. The state does require two witnesses at the ceremony, and your officiant must return the completed license to the Register of Deeds within 10 days. Confirm current requirements before you build travel around them.

Beach Wedding Permits by Town

There is no single coastal rule here. Each town sets its own, and they differ more than couples expect.

Wrightsville Beach requires a special event permit for a beach wedding, currently listed at $130 for fewer than 200 people. Apply through Parks and Recreation at 910-256-7925.

Bald Head Island and Figure Eight are private communities with their own access rules, gate lists and vendor requirements, set by the village or the association rather than by a public parks department.

If your ceremony is on sand, call the town before you order a single rental. The difference between "permit, $130, chairs fine" and "no permit needed, no chairs at all" is the difference between two entirely different weddings.

Where Guests Should Stay

Stay downtown for any Wilmington wedding. The historic district is walkable, the restaurants are good, and it is fifteen to twenty minutes from Wrightsville if the ceremony is on the sand.

Stay on the island for a Wrightsville or Carolina Beach wedding if the whole weekend lives there. Parking is the reason — a guest with a room on the island does not need a space near the ceremony.

Stay on Bald Head for a Bald Head wedding, without exception. The last ferry is a hard stop, and a guest list split across the island and Southport turns your reception into a departure schedule.

Check April dates against the Azalea Festival before contracting a room block, and expect summer weekend rates at the beaches to run well above downtown.

Give guests one parking instruction per event, by name. At the beaches in season this matters more than anything else you will put in the welcome materials.

The Local Logistics Couples Usually Miss

Beach parking is the whole problem in summer. Wrightsville and Carolina Beach fill by mid-morning on weekends. Shuttle guests or house them on the island.

Chairs and tents are banned on two of these beaches. Carolina Beach and Kure Beach both allow weddings and both prohibit rental setup on the sand.

The Bald Head ferry runs to a schedule your wedding does not control. Twenty minutes each way, on the hour out and the half hour back, and vendors need slots too.

Hurricane season is real here. This coast takes direct landfalls more often than most of the Southeast. September dates need a contingency plan and a conversation about coverage.

Humidity changes the timeline. From June to September, an outdoor ceremony before six in the evening is hard on anyone in a jacket, and harder on the florals.

Rideshare thins out at the beaches late at night. It is reliable downtown and unreliable on Pleasure Island at midnight.

Final Planning Advice

Pick the water you actually want, then read that town's rules before you fall in love with a design.

Wilmington will carry the weekend — the hotels, the restaurants, the walkability, the airport. The beaches will carry the photographs. The mistake is treating them as interchangeable, when one of them charges $130 for a permit, two of them will not let you put out a chair, and one of them can only be reached by boat.
